Chamberlain origniated as a garage door manufacturer. Recently, they created smart home garage door openers for the internet of things. Now, they are branching out into the whole smart home ecosystem.

MyQ at Chamberlain

Chamberlain is pushing hard into the internet of things space with acquisitions like Lockitron. I worked in advanced engineering department of MyQ, which focuses on the smart home products. I helped design speculative products as well as current apps.

Project Summary:

  • Explored opportunity areas for future Chamberlain smart home products.
  • Worked on a team of design and engineering interns to develop a working physical and digital prototype of a speculative product.
  • Developed user experiences that combined digital and physical interfaces.
  • Helped create a style guide for the current MyQ smart home app.

Responsibilities:

  • Interviewed and shadowed stakeholders.
  • Create prototypes and wireframes.
  • Worked with engineers on hybrid digital/physical experiences.
  • Designed an interface for a garage door status indicator along with an industrial designer.
  • Developed requirements for handoff to engineers.
  • Designed interfaces for a range of devices, from desktop to mobile to smart watches.
